behind the clay

that would be me!

My creative journey has taken many forms; sewing, painting, jewellery making, digital art, knitting, crochet and even building a giant 2m x 1m knitting loom for making tapestry. I’ve tried almost every art hobby you can imagine. I even ran an Etsy shop for a while, selling polymer clay earrings and hand-painted plant pots. But none of it stuck. Until ceramics.

What started with a few bags of clay and some cheap tools (albeit I do still use a Treseme hairdryer instead of a heat gun), slowly grew into something much more. Over time, I invested in my own wheel and kiln, and found myself completely immersed in the world of clay. It turns out, this is the one that stayed.

My education is in fashion, I earned a Distinction in my Masters Degree in Fashion Buying and Merchandising Management. I really thought my “big girl” career would be in the fashion world. But instead, I chose ceramics. And in many ways, I still use everything I learned: budgeting, pricing, sourcing, marketing, forecasting. It’s just applied in a much more tactile, slower, grounded way.

Ceramics brings me so much joy. Which always makes me laugh if I think too much about it, just a twenty-something year old girl excited to play with mud. It’s an art that has taught me patience and persistence, even though it can be insanely anger-inducing… There’s always something new to try, something to experiment with, or a technique to refine. It’s something you spend a lifetime learning.

There’s a special kind of joy in seeing the people closest to me enjoying a meal on dishes I made, or visiting my Nan’s house and chatting over a cup of tea in mugs shaped by my own hands. It’s a lovely thing to be able to share my art with the people in my life.

And now, I want to share it with you.
